R82 – Today’s patch release is brought to you by Nvidia

As the title implies the main reason for this release is that a newly introduced driver bug by Nvidia in its windows drivers causes all GPU filters to be ridiculously slow. They’re technically allowed to do this, the Vulkan standard is a wonderful document that allows you to allocate normal RAM instead of VRAM even when you pass the device local flag (on GPU required). For reasons nobody knows Nvidia decided to flip the switch and allocate the required type of memory in normal RAM instead of VRAM somewhere at the end of September or so. The code has now been adjusted to never try to use this memory type and follows the same code path as AMD.

In addition to that there have been several vspipe improvements where it now in mkv mode passes on the colorimetry, aspect ratio and chroma location information of frame 0. For developers the extension vk_khr_pipeline_executable_properties is now enabled by default and can be used. Note that since this extension only reports information relevant to developers when debugging shaders the API version wasn’t bumped.
